AWS, or Amazon Web Services, is a rapidly growing area of IT. It’s certainly not hard to understand, given the thriving nature of Amazon as a business and entity with its reach into so many aspects of the world.
So, just what is AWS?
It’s a cloud platform. Meaning, everything offered through AWS is cloud-based and accessible anywhere there is an internet connection. The tools within it however can’t be explained quite so simply. Within the AWS platform there are more than 200 services that assist all sizes and range of businesses, even government agencies. It’s an incredibly robust system that can lead to some interesting and complex careers in IT.
Who Needs AWS Training?
Those who want to work in the cloud-computing space would do well to learn more about AWS as a whole and determine if more specific cloud computing courses will assist in getting you to the type of career you’re interested in. A starting place is the AWS Academy Cloud Foundations course.
Taught through Ashton College as part of its AWS Academy suite of courses, this course makes understanding AWS core services accessible to anyone, in any career, IT or otherwise. (Though obviously, having interest and experience in IT will make it easier to appreciate.) Upon completion, successful students will be prepared to take the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam and earn their certification.
Once you’ve completed this stage, you’ll have a good idea if continuing your AWS education is the right path. Of course, it’s important to note that not everything within the AWS platform leads to the same type of job. Sure, courses like AWS Academy Cloud Architecting are about IT infrastructure using cloud-based solutions, which is expected. However, there are also courses like AWS Academy Machine Learning Foundations that explore the world of AI and machine learning in business environments.
These courses are for anyone who wants to do more with AWS options within an IT career.
Careers in IT that Make Use of AWS Training
With AWS training, a wide range of career options open up within organizations that make use of the AWS platform and suite of services. This may not be the only platform they use, but if it makes up a significant part of their business functionality, AWS training will be essential to keeping things running. Therefore, some jobs will be specific to your AWS training and others will include it, but not be entirely based upon it.
- Cloud Developer
For example, a cloud developer is one of the jobs that may make use of AWS training. Chances are, a course like AWS Academy Cloud Developing is going to be the most likely fit and this provides the information needed to take the exam required to earn the AWS Certified Developer – Associate Level.
A cloud developer develops software services and organization-wide applications that live in the cloud. Therefore, these are virtual systems, as opposed to systems that live on an organization’s servers. People who excel in this role have generally worked as software developers and have an extensive knowledge of cloud tools like those in AWS.
The work here is based in reviewing needs, considering security, designing systems, coding and creating solutions.
- AWS SysOps Administrator
Specific to their AWS training, these individuals will have taken courses like AWS Academy Cloud Operations and will have taken the exam to earn their AWS Certified Sysops Administrator – Associate certification. These are the people who ensure the entire function of the AWS platform is maintained and stays operational once it has been implemented.
This is a maintenance and administration role, but don’t let that fool you, it requires a keen understanding of the entire AWS platform and how users interact with it. Within this role comes the need to configure and fine-tune, monitor and manage the infrastructure while also improving the resources.
It’s a mixture of IT, management and security as this individual will have a team of people assisting in the day-to-day activities of monitoring but also identifies areas that need resolution and opportunities for new developments. There is also the need for ongoing backup as well as training of all employees within the organization who make use of the systems.
- Data Engineer
In an organization that requires data analysis (almost all of them) a course like AWS Academy Data Analytics will help provide a deeper understanding of Big Data, how to analyze it and how to apply it. At this stage, individuals need to be advanced in their IT concept knowledge.
A data engineer essentially helps the organization find the trends and opportunities within data sets. They then develop the algorithms to make that data more useful to the organization in their sales and service processes.
Database design, understanding of SQL and programming knowledge make up just part of what these very technical communicators need. However, as you may have just noticed, these individuals are communicators, with some, hopefully, communication skills training. They don’t just assess, define and disseminate data, they also communicate it to the teams that need it. They are key participants in organizational teams to understand the needs, goals and focus they are supporting.
This support begins with developing and maintaining the data architecture around the organizational needs. There may be data acquisition and there will definitely be research, analytics and modelling. People who enjoy problem solving and doing so with great complexity are often a good fit for data engineering.
- System Integrator – Cloud
System Integrators are all about deployment and troubleshooting. These people are always striving to make things work together and ensure that problems are resolved efficiently within AWS applications. As new applications are rolled out, these individuals stay on top of them to see if they are working as expected, team members have the knowledge they need to use them and roll-outs are successful.
As more organizations make use of cloud-based services like AWS, having a system integrator is becoming a more essential role.
There are always a growing number of jobs in the IT space and a complex range of courses that can lead to a fulfilling career. If you want to be part of cloud-based software growth and help organization’s better implement AWS systems into their business, taking the foundations course is an excellent starting point that can lead to progressively more challenging and complex roles.
